چکیده

The attenuating effect of furosemide premedication on exercised-induced pulmonary capillary hypertension is similar when the drug is administered 2, 3, or 4 h before exercise. However, this effect is not observed when furosemide is administered 1 h pre-exertion. Pulmonary Vascular Pressures of EIPH-Positive Thoroughbred Horses During Exercise Performed at Maximal Heart Rate After Administration of Various Doses of Furosemide

A linear dose response to furosemide in terms of attenuation of the exercise-induced pulmonary capillary hypertension does not exist in Thoroughbred horses. Furosemide 2.0 mg/kg IV given 4 h before exercise further significantly ( p , 0.05) attenuates the exercise-induced pulmonary capillary hypertension compared with the 250-mg dose routinely used at Illinois racetracks. Authors’ address: 212 ...

Effect of the Sequential Administration of Two Doses of Furosemide on Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hypertension in Thoroughbred Horses

Compared with a single 250-mg dose of furosemide given intravenously 4 h prior to exercise, the administration of two sequential intravenous doses of furosemide (4 and 2 h prior to exercise) does not cause further attenuation of exercise-induced pulmonary capillary hypertension in Thoroughbred horses exercising at their maximal heart rate. Therefore, the sequential administration of two doses o...

Pulmonary vascular pressures of exercising thoroughbred horses with and without endoscopic evidence of EIPH.

Exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) is a common occurrence in racehorses. The objective of this study was to compare pulmonary vascular pressures of healthy Thoroughbred horses with and without postexertion endoscopically detectable fresh blood in the trachea. The nasopharynx, larynx, and trachea (down to the carina) of horses were examined weekly with an endoscope 55-60 min postexerti...

Association between exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage and performance in Thoroughbred racehorses.

OBJECTIVE To determine whether exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) was associated with racing performance inThoroughbred horses not medicated with furosemide and not using nasal dilator strips. DESIGN Observational cross-sectional study. ANIMALS 744 two- to 10-year-old Thoroughbred horses racing in Melbourne, Australia. PROCEDURE Horses were enrolled prior to racing, and a trache...
